Do you know what your body needs? Protein! Protein is a macronutrient, which means that it provides the necessary nutrients in larger quantities than fats and carbohydrates. Your body needs protein for muscle growth, also cell repair, immune function, hormones, and more.

Protein is found in meat products like beef and chicken; dairy products like milk and cheese; nuts like almonds or pistachios; seafood like clams or scallops; tofu or tempeh with soy sauce or miso paste. Here is a list of common foods that are high in protein:

Beef (incredibly lean red meat)

Cheese, Cottage Cheese and yoghurt

Chicken, Turkey and Duck (Light Meat) – choose white meat for less fat. Also suitable are fish like tuna and sardines.

Eggs – both whites and yolks have lots of protein. Try to avoid the yolks if you are watching your fat intake, though. Fry up a few egg whites in olive oil for a delicious protein-rich snack! Add diced peppers too for added taste. Or try scrambled eggs with feta cheese. Mmm, delicious! Add some salsa, too, for an extra dose of nutrients and fibre.

Fish (many types)

Grains – One cup of cooked brown rice has about 8 grams of protein. Try to get whole grains like brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and 100% whole wheat bread for more fibre and nutrients.

Nuts (most types), including almonds, pistachios, pecans, peanuts or peanut butter – Careful though! High-fat nuts like cashews and macadamia are not as good for you. Peanuts are legumes (nuts in the pod).

Oats – Oatmeal has lots of protein if you add milk and nuts to it. 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup skim milk contain about 12 grams of protein.

Protein powders like whey, soy and casein. These powders are great for adding protein to smoothies and other recipes.

Egg whites are high in protein but can be a significant fat source if eaten alone or combined with other foods.

Protein is also found in beans and legumes. You may have heard that beans are high in carbohydrates and sometimes wonder if they are suitable for you. Beans can help you lose body fat if used correctly, as they contain fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. Black beans contain about 15 grams of protein per cup. You can easily add beans to a salad or other dish for extra flavour and nutrients.
